On October 23, 2017, the Midlothian High’s Library hosted a pumpkin carving Halloween celebration after school. The occasion started with everyone lining up to grab their sweet and salty treats to go along with Apple Cider to drink. Mrs. Heather Murfee, Ms. Emily Mazzanti, and Ms. Chiquita Dawson passed out pumpkins and carving tools to each participant. After everyone received a pumpkin, students started to gut and empty their pumpkins, a messy, but necessary job. After a little while, a special visitor from the grave, Mr. Edgar Allen Poe, portrayed by Mr. Daniel Cheatham, sauntered into the library.  He told the group a little about “himself” and how he died. Students then listened to Poe’s famous poem The Raven, while enjoying snacks and socializing with each other.

Afterwards, students began taping and pinning template ideas to their pumpkins, and the carving began! Participants carefully carved their own unique structures and laughed while sharing their creations with friends. The carving celebration lasted from 2:00 pm -3:30 pm. At the conclusion, the students finished their pumpkins and grabbed a candle to take home to light up their masterpieces.

Mrs. Murfee, Ms. Mazzanti, and Ms. Dawson plan to have more after school events throughout the year, such as an IRL Gaming event on November 2nd and a #GlobalCelebrations event on December 6th.
