The Midlothian Girls Indoor Track Team finishes 2nd place overall at the Regional Track Meet.

On February 21, 2021, the Indoor Track Team competed at the VHSL Region 5B Indoor Track and Field Championships at Atlee High School. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, spectators were not permitted inside the stadium, however, athletes received encouragement during their performances from teammates, coaches, and even school administrators. Athletes who finished in the top three places at the event now advance to the VHSL Class 5 Indoor Track and Field Championships meet, which made this meet extremely important. Both the girls and boys teams competed well, with strong performances on both sides.

The girl’s team placed 2nd at Regionals, with top contributors including; Caroline Bowe (1st, 1000-meter run, and 1st, 1600-meter run),  Dasia Hardy (3rd, 300-meter dash, and 3rd, 55-meter dash), Katherine Krievs (1st, 3200-meter run), Christina Mulroy (4th, 500-meter dash), Ella Young (10th, high jump), Madelyn Venable (3rd, 55-meter hurdles, 2nd, triple jump, and 1st, long jump) and Emily DeWitt (3rd, pole vault). The 4 x 800-meter relay team, consisting of Millie Weinhold, Megan Lamberson, Katherine Krievs and Chloe Martin, came in 1st place. The 4 x 400-meter relay team of Millie Weinhold, Caroline Bowe, Christina Mulroy and Madelyn Venable placed 1st. The 4 x 200 team that included Madelyn Venable, Tanaiya Turner, Dasia Hardy and Megan Dwyer sprinted into 4th place. Senior Caroline Bowe, who will be competing next week at the VHSL Class 5 Indoor Track and Field Championships, felt “The girls team did great! Everyone as individuals did awesome” and the relays did a great job of “working together to place high and have success!” Bowe concluded that it was a great day “to be a Trojan!”

The boys team also competed well, finishing 3rd in the region, with showings including Jack Laser (4th, long jump), Max McKey (6th, triple jump), Zach Brown (2nd, high jump), Michael Wallace (3rd, 55-meter dash), Armani Hinman (3rd, 55-meter hurdles), Brian Tavenner (4th, 1600-meter run, and 4th, 3200-meter run), Justin Valera (5th, 300-meter dash), Jack Edwards (6th, 1000 meter run) and Michael Wunderlich (4th, 500 meter dash). In addition, the relay teams made their presence known with the 4×800 team, consisting of Jack Edwards, C.J. Mierchuk, Jack Laser and Owen Widrick, finishing 3rd in their event. The 4 x 400 team, including Michael Wunderlich, Michael Wallace, Max McKey and Justin Valera, ran swiftly into 3rd and the 4 x 200 team, composed of Jack Laser, Justin Valera, Max McKey and Michael Wallace, secured 2nd. Junior Jack Laser, who will travel alongside Bowe to compete at the VHSL Class 5 Indoor Track and Field Championships as well, strongly believes all teams “performed well” and looks forward to his first Indoor Track State meet, especially since the new complex “is going to be awesome.”

Congratulations to all of the athletes who competed at the regional meet under the leadership of Coach Stan Morgan, Coach Dan Ward and Coach Nick Davis! Good luck to all of the athletes who qualified for the VHSL Class 5 Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 2, 2021, at the new state-of-the-art Virginia Beach Sports Center.
