On February 25 and February 26, 2022, Midlo’s Indoor Track and Field Team competed in the VHSL Class 5 Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Virginia Beach Sports Center. After a season filled with many meet cancellations due to either weather or COVID-19 concerns, athletes continued to work hard at each practice. Those who achieved a state qualifying standard or placed third at the VHSL Class Region 5B Indoor Track and Field Championships were then eligible to compete at the state meet in hopes of winning the ultimate state title.

The meet began on Friday with the girls 4×800 meter team that was composed of Alannah Runge, Gabrielle DuBois, Elise Graves and Megan Lamberson who ended up claiming fourth place with a time of 9:53.62. They ended up dropping over ten seconds from their best time during the season. The following day, in the 1000-meter run, Kylie Bonser placed second with a time of 3:01, which represented another impressive personal record. Then, Gabriella Garcia placed third in the 3200-meter run. To finish the meet, Midlo’s 4×400 meter team, consisting of Kylie Bonser, Elise Graves, Alannah Runge and Gabby Jones, placed sixth.

Graves, a freshman competing on both relay teams, found her first indoor state meet to be “exciting because it was amazing seeing [the team’s] hard work and energy [they] put into this season pay off” as she achieved an impressive PR in the 4×800 and high placements in both.

Overall, the efforts of the Midlo ladies resulted in a tenth place finish in the team competition.

On the other hand, senior Armani Hinman and sophomore Christian Lanier represented the boys team at the competition and were both in the 55 meter hurdles event. Hinman, who advanced to the finals on Saturday after his performance on Friday, placed seventh with a time of 8.18.

With the indoor season concluded, the Midlo Outdoor Track and Field team will now begin their round of training in preparation for upcoming meets in the months ahead.
