Lady Trojans dominate the court against the Cavaliers

On Thursday, January 21, 2021, the Midlo girls basketball team faced the Clover Hill Cavaliers. Coming off a currently undefeated record, the team hoped to continue their winning streak in this match. At 7:15 p.m., the team huddled around Coach Adam Layton and broke with a cheer, ready to face their opponents. Off the jump ball, each team fought with matched intensity, resulting in the close score of 10-9 in Midlo’s favor. Midlo managed to widen the point gap, utilizing rebound and foul shots to bring the score to 14-9. With less than a minute left in the first quarter, Clover Hill reciprocated, taking possession and drawing multiple foul shots to gain points. With a shot from a fast break, the Cavaliers managed to slightly close in as the first quarter finished with a score of 14-12. 

As the whistle blew to kick off the second quarter, the Trojans began with possession, looking to maintain their lead. Midlo gained the first point of the quarter, sinking a foul shot. With cheers sounding from the sidelines, Midlo then held strong on defense, only allowing for a foul shot from the Lancers, which placed the score at 15-13. Midlo reciprocated with dynamic passing on the offensive end, creating multiple scoring opportunities and bringing the score to 23-14. With 20 seconds left in the quarter, standout senior Jenna Shadders sunk a three-pointer, sending the team into halftime with a significant lead. 

The Cavaliers started with possession in the second half, but senior Abbie Campbell swiftly intercepted the ball. Clover Hill reciprocated with a steal, followed by a fast break to their end of the court. Midlo bounced back, regaining possession and bringing the score to 29-15. Midlo continued their cohesive energy, as Shadders sent a quick bounce pass to Campbell, who scored with a layup. Then, the Trojans drew a foul, gaining extra points. Off this momentum, senior Madison Fath executed a three-pointer, bringing the score to 40-20. Throughout the remainder of the fourth quarter, Midlo held strong with aggressive play and furthered their lead over the Cavaliers. As the buzzer rang to signal the end of the game, Midlo proved victorious, with a score of 55-26. 

Next, the Trojans will rival the James River Rapids in a home game on Thursday, January 28, 2021.
