Midlo Indoor Track flourishes at Regionals: Ladies claim first
2020 VHSL Region 5B Indoor Track and Field Championships
On February 12, 2o2o, and February 13, 2020, Midlo’s Indoor Track and Field team competed at the VHSL Region 5B Indoor Track and Field Championships at Henrico High School. After months of preparation, Midlo’s prime runners, jumpers, and throwers gave the competition their all over the course of the two-day meet. If an athlete finishes in the top three places or earns a qualifying mark, they will advance to the VHSL Class 5 Indoor Track and Field Championships, making this event extremely high-stakes. Throughout the meet, Midlo’s athletes worked together to secure a strong team finish, as the Midlo Girls finished in first place, and the Midlo Boys finished in twelfth in the team competition.
On the girls’ side, the Midlo team had a strong showing at the regional level. These athletes pushed through fatigue, rain, and sub-optimal temperatures to earn their first team championship in Region 5B. Top contributors include: Dasia Hardy (3rd, 55 meter dash and 3rd, 300 meter dash), Isabella McNulty (10th, 500 meter dash), Caroline Bowe (1st, 1000 meter run and 1st, 1600 meter run), Gabriella Garcia (1st, 3200 meter run), and Madelyn Venable (3rd, 55 meter hurdles; 8th, long jump; 3rd, triple jump). Additionally, the 4×800 meter relay team, comprised of Millie Weinhold, Kylie Bonser, Gabriella Garcia, and Lena Caffall placed third, while the 4×200 meter relay team, which consisted of Asia Turner, Lauren Branch, Madelyn Venable, and Dasia Hardy, placed sixth against formidable competitors. Rounding out the relays, the 4×400 meter relay team, which included Isabella McNulty, Lena Caffall, Caroline Bowe, and Christina Mulroy, pushed through all pain to finish second overall. Junior Millie Weinhold reflects that she is “really proud of [the] team for coming together and putting all of [their] best efforts into winning.”
Regarding the Midlo Boys, the 2020 Regional Meet brought fast times and memorable successes. Top performers included: Michael Wallace (16th, 500 meter dash), Will Gardner (8th, 1600 meter run), Brian Tavenner (5th, 3200 meter run), Armani Hinman (7th, 55 meter hurdles), Zachary Brown (8th, high jump), and Zach Moreau (5th, triple jump). The boys also found success in the relay races; in the 4×800 meter relay, the team, comprised of Jack Edwards, Will Gardner, Brian Tavenner, and Michael Wunderlich, placed eighth with a time of 8:45. The 4×200 meter relay team, which included Jay Burdett, Adrien Istre, Max McKey, and Hayden Murphey, finished in twelfth place, while the 4×400 meter relay team, which consisted of Jay Burdett, Michael Wunderlich, Michael Wallace, and Shane Nalls, placed seventh.
