Midlothian huddles up before the game

On Friday, April 14th, the Boys Lacrosse team had their biggest game of the year against James River. Star sophomore Casey Joyce, who has been out the previous two weeks due to a shoulder injury returned. An undefeated Midlothian team went up against a one loss James River.

The much anticipated game started out slowly with James River scoring the first goal. Both Jason Goodwin and Dillon Powell could not find the back of the net due to the powerful defense and sheer size of James River. James River’s speed in the midfield posed a big problem for Midlothian, as they covered ground and did not allow Midlothian to reset in their positions. Senior Mac Williams said, ¨We were slow on intensity; we came out playing slow against an older, more experienced team.¨

After a first half score of 1-4, Midlothian realized that they needed to stop scoring on fast breaks.  Midlothian seemed to lose energy until three-sport freshman athlete, Will Pomeroy started a slight comeback in the fourth quarter followed by sophomore Trevor Chirstmas and two more goals by Coleman Rock. However, as Midlothian focused on attack, their defense suffered, allowing James River to score four more times, capitalizing on fast breaks, thus ending the game in a depressing score of 10-6. The Trojans loss can be attributed to the lack of intensity by Midlo and stellar game by James River’s Nate Urso, who totaled four goals for the Rapids.

In regards to the future, the lacrosse team learned they need to work on transition defense, scoring off of passing instead of relying on solo goals. The Trojans will be put to the test again as they play Atlee, a talented undefeated team, on Monday, April 25th.
