The Undead Underground
Music Review
New York hip hop trio, Flatbush Zombies, lead the progressive, contemporary music movement in the Brooklyn Borough of the Big Apple. The psychedelic, trippy band of misfits consists of: Meechy Darko, Zombie Juice, and Erick Arc Elliott at the helm of production for the group.
The group began gaining traction in 2012 with Death and Reincarnation Under God’s Supervision. This mixtape boasted a 16 song track included in-your-face vocals from Meechy and Juice, with only sprinkles of Elliot’s masterful lyricism that would later shine through in the following projects. Although Elliot’s appearances were sparse, his production was the complete opposite, painting the beautiful background for the tape. The next forward thinking project from the group, Better of Dead, contained an impressive 19 tracks with ethereal, delicate tunes like 222 and Bliss. Using only small bits of outside production from the likes of Harry Fraud and other underground legends, complementing Elliot’s multifaceted beats, this project truly showed the group’s ability to make a diverse track with versatile flows and melodies.
The next appearance by the group, other than their many singles and loose tracks found on their Soundcloud, came in the form of a collaboration EP with other New York underground beasts, the Underachievers. The Clockwork Indigo EP was fully dressed up and down with trademark flows and instrumentals from these underground gods. Then, in 2016, the group released its debut album, 3001: A Laced Odyssey, with a consistent color-filled theme. The whole album lines up perfectly with Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece, 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Now, in 2017, the group has released a few singles here-and-there, hopefully hinting at another follow-up album to further push the boundaries. Somehow, the group single-handedly became the modern version of Jimi Hendrix, colorful rock stars to their fan and undead lords of the underground New York scene.
