The girls indoor track team celebrate their win together.

As the Trojans roll into the postseason with expectations of regaining the state championship, the indoor track athletes continues to work harder than ever. On February 9, 2017,  the Arthur Ashe Center in downtown Richmond hosted the 4A Conference 20 Championships.  The teams competing included: Monacan, Huguenot, Powhatan, Dinwiddie, Hanover, and our very own Midlothian Trojans.  At the beginning of the meet, the Trojans had a rusty start, but later, they quickly adapted to the competition and proved unbeatable.  Both the boys and girls track team placed 1st in the Conference meet.

Many of Midlo’s athletes had outstanding performances, including Court Warfield, Ryan Townes, and Erin Babashak.  Among a tough competitive field in the men’s high jump, Ryan Townes came away champion by jumping an astonishing 6 feet.  Townes said, “I felt a rush of confidence right before the jump and just went up for it.”  Later in the competition, Court Warfield, named the Men’s Athlete of the Year, earned his place as the men’s 1600 meter conference champion, as well as helping his team win the 4×400 meter relay.  “It’s humbling but overall, it was good to get the team win.”  Erin Babashak, named Field Event Athlete of the Meet, successfully performed in the triple jump, long jump, and high jump.  “I was very honored to win it as a sophomore and to see how all of my hard work has paid off.”

Not only did our athletes show their A-game at Conference, but our coaches did as well.  Sprinting Coach Dan Ward put in hard work throughout the morning monitoring the field events.  Along with Coach Ward, Coach Stan Morgan assisted his athletes with continuous advice before races.  At the end of the meet, all of the other coaches in the conference voted Coach Stan Morgan Coach of the Year.  Following Coach Morgan’s recognition, the team celebrated a big win as they ran up to receive their 4A Conference 20 championship trophies.

Following the Conference 20 meet, the Trojans will move on to more challenging competition at Regionals and States. We wish the best of luck to the Midlothian Indoor Track Team as they conclude their 2016-2017 season.
