The old Midlothian Library opened in 1980 on donated land, and was placed directly next to Watkins Elementary. Despite having undergone multiple renovations over the years the need for a new facility came from the increasing number of families relocating to the area.
On Wednesday Jan. 31, 2024 after four years of closed doors the Midlothian library reopened its doors to the public with a brand new building, redesigned spaces and exciting new resources. The mission and vision of the library is to enhance the lives of citizens by providing tools for a lifetime of learning. They also look to deliver a world-class library service that informs and inspires people, and hopefully fosters a vibrant and thriving community.
The library looks to put a new focus on additional resources, and prove that a library can extend past just the physical books on shelves. A recent survey shows that on average 70% of customers use the library and the services, resources, and extensive material collections for personal learning. Which has lead many libraries nationwide to reinvent how people not only see what a library has to offer, but also how they interact with the resources at their fingertips.
The new branch offers book reservation and pick up, community volunteer opportunities, part-time jobs, and even fun activities to fill up an afternoon. These activities range from book club meetings to author meet and greets to storytimes, and more.
