2019 SHF Inductions

Inductees Bridget Millacci, Lauren Schmidt, Leah Hoffman, Molly Goecker, Cara Hahn, and Hope Morefield light their candles.

On Wednesday, November 20, 2019, Le Société Honoraire de Français induction ceremony began at 6 o’clock in the Midlo Library, inducting 10 new members to the SHF. The ceremony commenced as seniors Rylee Gregory and Nadia Yenrick welcomed everyone and explained the itinerary for the night. Junior Makayley Crisp shared a brief history of the organization; The American Association of Teachers of French created the society in 1949 to encourage the spread of the romance language, while Midlothian High School adopted the honor society in 1973.

Junior Seth Grossman explained the requirements for induction into the honor society; students must have an interest in French activities in and outside of the classroom, study in level 3 or higher, maintain an A average in French and a B or higher in other classes. Sophomore Olivia Cotrell introduced the current members of the SHF, telling a little bit about each person and their achievements in the French language.

Finally, La Course du Flambeau began. Junior Emily Gundel called each inductee to the front to take a candle and stand in line, then commenced the lighting of the candles, repeating of the motto, “L’homme qui sait deux langue en vaut deux.” which translates to: “The man who knows two languages is worth two.” The process continued until every inductee had lit a candle, repeated the motto at least once, and received a certificate. Following the ceremony, Madame Hannah Foster, a French instructor at Midlo, closed the ceremony by inviting everyone to join them for cake.
