For the past 10 years, time and time again, the freshman class has failed to beat the juniors in the Powderpuff Preliminary Competition. On Saturday, October 11, the freshman underdogs broke their losing streak in a 6-0 win over the juniors. Despite only having 10 players at the time of competition, the girls continued to show up and play
“We played with 10 players all game, but the girls just kept wanting to work,” JJ Anderson (9) said. “They always wanted to work and they always wanted to win. They got scared at first, and they had to overcome stuff. It just feels amazing that they got to win, even though they were shorthanded and underlooked.”
Samara Reyes (9) played as the freshman team’s running back, receiver, and quarterback. Reyes ran the ball 50 yards from the opposing team’s 20 yard line, recovering a play for the freshman.
“[The] most remarkable play was when our running back/receiver/quarterback Samara takes [the ball] from our own 20 after getting backed up and runs 50 yards,” Anderson said. “And then she has another play that gets the first down that seals the game.”

The games didn’t end when the freshman took the gold. Afterwards, the sophomores faced off against the seniors, suffering a 26-0 loss against the Class of 2026. However, the seniors came in with a sense of familiarity, after playing with nearly the same team for three years in a row.
“We have had basically the same team for the past two years. We come out day in and day out, and, we always grind, work hard, [and] our players are committed and they really just hustle every day of the week,” Lucas Cabral (12) said. “[They] study their plays at home and we just hope to bring this championship back to the seniors.”

Freshman will face off against the seniors this Friday, October 17th at Poates Stadium in the Powderpuff Finals.
“[It’s going to be] a really great game. I want 2016 Warriors versus Cavaliers, LeBron versus Stephen Curry,” Erin Rice (12) said. “This is going to be a great game.”
