Spirit Week is deeper than just costumes. The common show of spirit brings students together in wacky ways in order to bond together before the inevitable football game on Friday. But this round, the Spirit Week brought controversy, with the themes being disregarded, and played off as too difficult. Students had largely varying opinions on the themes.
Many students participated in Pajama Day, the first day of the week. “Pajama Day has been my favorite day of the week, because I liked how I got to be comfortable the whole day,” Kyra Brown, 11, said. “I also really liked the blackout on Friday, though.”
Most students shared similar mindsets about PJ day. However, the next day received much less traction, with the theme being 100’s Day, where students dressed up as old people. Those who decided to participate were all in. “I think that the old person spirit day is a fun way to have kids be involved in spirit week, because it’s something everyone can do,” Samira Umurzokova, 9, says. Despite some of the love this theme received, it also received plenty of all around negative reviews. When asked which Spirit Day theme was the worst, 70% of students answered this one.
One day with high participation was the theme of Soccer Moms vs Barbecue Dads. Many of the students participated, and liked the theme. “I really like coming to school and seeing everyone look really silly,” Olivia Hassmer, 11, said, “I saw a bunch of girls with fake beards and fake bellies, and it made me giggle. My sister got her boyfriend to wear a Lululemon jacket, and I think it’s really fun for everyone to come to school looking stupid when no one can really judge them.”
While not every day got the entire student body participation, one day which had the most school wide participation was the day of the pep rally, with class colors. This is a staple for Midlo students, and walking around the hallways, it is clear that Midlo takes spirit days seriously, almost everyone in the uniform colors of their class.
