Champions Together Club is one part of the Special Olympics Virginia’s program promoting leadership for youth and being inclusive with activities. Their goal is to create a community where all youth with autism spectrum disorders, and intellectual abilities are included and taught respect and dignity.
The meetings of the club are held in room 320 usually during map. Marie Ranrianasolo is the teacher sponsor. The club leaders are Cole Caffall and Sidney Trexler, who are the presidents, along with Izzy Mercer, who is the vice president. Throughout the year they participate in many athletic activities including Bocce Ball, Champions together Track and field, the polar plunge, holiday events, and many more.
“I do think this club is a good addition to the school because it promotes inclusivity and helps special education become a greater part of our school.” Alexis Grace, 10, said. The club is an opportunity to meet and create friendships with everyone. Students with disabilities and are on the autism spectrum do better towards a positive attitude and someone who can demonstrate a greater understanding or someone they truly trust. So, it’s good to always have a smile on your face.
In order to join all you need is five dollars and a positive attitude. Meetings are every Monday or Friday during the map, and all dues are due by September 23. Also if you want a tee-shirt to support the club it is only an additional 10 dollars, which is also to be brought to room 320. Once a member, you must sign up for at least one of the events to be counted towards in a college resume. They’re always looking for more members to help grow the community.
