Commotio Cordis, a rare event caused by a blow to the chest, as Damar Hamlin found out the hard way during a run-of-the-mill play during a Monday Night Football game. On January 2nd Damar Hamlin a Buffalo Bills safety took a blow to the chest on Monday Night Football and collapsed on the field. Thought to be suffering from some type of cardiac arrest Hamlin was rushed to the Buffalo hospital where he underwent a series of test and evaluations and stayed for nine days. Hamlin later got diagnosed with Commotio Cordis which put simply is a rare cardiac arrest immediately following a blow to the chest. The impact of that blow induces a potentially lethal heart rhythm disturbance. With any cardiac arrest, survival depends on people nearby acting to correct the problem within seconds to minutes. Hamlin was fortunate to have the right team at the right time around him to get him the help and support he needed quickly. Hamlin was cleared to resume playing football and returned to the field nearly four months later after going into cardiac arrest.
