Spanish teacher, Travis Spencer, invited her students to attend a field trip to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts on Tues., April 22. The field trip was designed so students could view a variety of art pieces, as well as experience a guided tour of the Frida Kahlo exhibit. The exhibit, which will be temporarily displayed at the VMFA between April 2025 to Sept. 2025, was composed of various works by Frida Kahlo, photographs of the artist, videos, and an overview of her life.
49 Students attended the field trip and six faculty members chaperoned. The students were split into six groups of their choice, with one chaperone per group. For the first half of the trip, three groups went on the guided tour of the Frida Kahlo “Beyond the Myth” Exhibit, while the other groups were allowed to view art from the museum’s permanent collection. However, as per an assignment dedicated to the field trip, students were required to find specific works of art that were painted by various Spanish artists they had learned about in class. After finding the paintings, they had to take a photo with the art work to prove they had found them. The photos were part of the assignment, which also required each student to describe the individual works of art and write a reflection about the trip.
Halfway through the allotted time slot for the trip, the groups switched, with the first groups now being able to roam the museum and the second groups going on the guided tour. Once the tour was finished and all students had seen the necessary works of art, they all then ventured to Chuy’s, a Texas-Mexican restaurant where all attendees were able to enjoy a nice lunch. At the restaurant, the students and faculty had the opportunity to consume a variety of dishes and learn how to make guacamole from one of the workers.
Overall, the field trip was a major success.
