The Debate Club met on Tuesday, October 1, in club sponsor Jaryd Engberg’s room. “The meetings start out with me bringing any announcements to the table and then we will split into our different events,” Engberg said. “I try to meet with a different group every week, whether it’s Public Forum, Lincoln Douglas, or Student Congress, to offer my advice and listen to what they are working on.”
Debate club meets every Tuesday in room 138 from 3:00-4:00. They use this time to plan and prepare for tournaments. “It’s very helpful in improving my writing and argumentative skills.” Cormac Hogan,10, said, when asked about his feelings regarding the club as a first-year member. “Mr. Engberg is also super nice and does a good job instructing us.” While researching and writing are aspects of the club, public speaking skills and confident presentation are crucial.
“It’s great to be back into the swing of tournament life. While they are long and take up large chunks of time, they leave everybody feeling accomplished and excited,” Engberg said. The first official debate tournament will be held at Manchester High School on October 26. “I’m excited about participating in the tournaments,” Hogan said. “We will be well prepared and I’m sure they will be interesting.”
