On Wednesday May 12, the Midlothian Girls Lacrosse team celebrated their 2021 Senior Night in a home game against the Clover Hill Cavaliers. Prior to the game, the team lined up on the field to recognize the senior players: Riley Martin, Maddie Burke, Shelby Harris, Grace Ruggiero, Lily DeBruycker and Kaitlyn Moore. Each senior walked down the field with their parents as their favorite memories from their time on the team as well as their aspirations for the future were announced to the spectators.

Senior Girls Lacrosse Class of 2021:

Riley Martin has played on varsity for four years and serves as a captain this season. Her favorite part of being on the Midlo lacrosse team is the opportunity to spend every day with her best friends. Martin will attend UVA next year and plans to major in commerce or economics.

Maddie Burke has been on varsity for four years and is a captain this season. Her favorite part from her time on the team was the bonds she formed with her teammates over the years and getting to play defense with her sister, Chloe. In the fall, Maddie will attend VCU and major in international business.

Shelby Harris has been a part of the lacrosse team for three years. She is also a member of the field hockey team and Midlo’s FBLA. Her favorite memories from her time on the team were all of the pasta parties and team bus rides. Harris will attend UVA in the fall.

Lily DeBruycker has been on the varsity team for three years and is serving as a captain this year. Her favorite part of being a part of the program is joking around with the team. She will miss “the friendship, laughs, and support” from the team. DeBruycker will attend JMU and plans to major in biology.

Grace Ruggiero has played on varsity lacrosse for three years. She enjoyed all the bus rides and pasta parties throughout her time on the team. One of her favorite memories was when she melted her mouth guard into her braces freshman year, and it was stuck in her mouth for fourteen hours. Next year, she will attend JMU to major in communications and science disorders.

Kaitlyn Moore has been a part of the lacrosse program since eighth grade. This year, she is working as the team manager. She is also a member of the Midlo Field Hockey team Her favorite part of the season was participating in team bonding. Next year, Moore will attend John Tyler Community College and plans to transfer to a four-year university.

After the senior recognitions, the team took the field against the Cavaliers. After a swift draw control, the Trojans pushed ahead and maintained their lead throughout the game. With cohesive team play and goals from high scorers Martin, DeBruycker, and sophomore Reagan Underwood, Midlo proved victorious with a score of 19-4.

After a successful senior night, the lacrosse seniors will look to lead the team throughout the remainder of the condensed season as they take on tough competition in the following weeks. The seniors will be greatly missed in the following seasons as they journey into their next chapter after high school.
